Questions and answers

What does the salsa rhythm look like on the eight-count?

This is how the parts of the rhythm section fall on the dancer's count: eight beats over two bars, steps on 1-2-3 and 5-6-7. Clave 2-3: two strokes in the first bar, three in the second; in 3-2 the pattern starts from the second bar, and both bells and the cáscara shift with it. The timbalero plays the mambo bell instead of the cáscara in the loud sections, together with the bongo bell.

What is salsa practice music?

It is music with a voice counting the beats over it: “one, two, three… five, six, seven”. Dancers use it to learn the basic step and combinations while the count in a regular song is still hard to hear.

Here the music is not a recording: it is played right on the page by the clave, the campana, the congas, the bass and the piano, plus the instructor's count. So you can change the tempo, the instruments and the count itself as you like.

Why is this handier than a track with counts?

A track has one tempo and one kind of count. Here the tempo goes from 60 to 260 beats per minute: start at 140 and add 10 once the step is clean.

You choose the count as well: every beat from 1 to 8, the steps 1-2-3, 5-6-7, only 1 and 5, only 2 and 6 for On2. The voice and every instrument have their own volume, and the music does not end after three minutes.

How do I practise with it?

First dance the basic step to the full count at a slow tempo. Then switch the instructor to “1, 5”: it calls only the start of each four, and you count the rest yourself.

When that works too, switch the instructor off and keep the count from the congas and the campana. If you lose it, bring the voice back with the 0 key.

Which languages does the count come in?

Six, chosen on the Instructor card: English, Russian, Spanish, French, Italian and German.

Can I make the music simpler or closer to a real band?

Yes. To make it simpler, switch off the piano and the bass: the clave, the bell and the congas stay with the count. To make it sound like a band, switch on the güiro, the timbales and the bongos.

Every part is switched by pressing its card or a digit on the keyboard.

Can I download the music or listen offline?

There is no file to download, but the site works offline. Open salsabeat.ru/en/ on your phone and add it to your home screen: after that it opens like an app, plays without a connection and keeps the screen awake.

You can keep a rhythm you have set up as a link: “Share link” remembers the tempo, the instruments and the count.
