Questions and answers

What does the salsa rhythm look like on the eight-count?

This is how the parts of the rhythm section fall on the dancer's count: eight beats over two bars, steps on 1-2-3 and 5-6-7. Clave 2-3: two strokes in the first bar, three in the second; in 3-2 the pattern starts from the second bar, and both bells and the cáscara shift with it. The timbalero plays the mambo bell instead of the cáscara in the loud sections, together with the bongo bell.

What is the cáscara?

The cáscara is the pattern the timbalero plays with a stick on the metal shell of the drum. The sound is dry and quiet, so the cáscara is played in the calm sections of a song: the verses and under a piano solo.

The pattern takes two bars and follows the clave: accented strokes alternate with quieter ones.

When does the timbalero play the mambo bell?

In the loud sections: when the chorus and the horns come in, the timbalero moves from the shell to the bell. The mambo bell sounds together with the bongocero's campana, and the two make the dense ringing that marks the peak of a song.

Which timbales patterns does SalsaBeat have?

Three. Cáscara is the pattern on the shell. Cáscara with drum on 4 adds a stroke on the drum on “four” and “eight”. Mambo bell is the bell for the loud sections.

What does hearing the timbales give a dancer?

The timbales tell you the form of the song. A dry cáscara means a calm section; the move to the bell means the music is building. Dancers use this to change the character of the dance with the music.
